Today, at its May meeting in Munich, the Board of the European Copper Institute elected Gonzalo Cuadra, General Manager Codelco Services Ltd, as its new chairman and, Oriol Guixà, President and CEO of La Farga, as its new vice-chairman for the next two year term. The Board of Directors thanked Italo Romano (KME Group) for his leadership and commitment as chairman since May 2014.
Gonzalo Cuadra is a graduate in Civil Engineering from the Pontificia Católica University of Chile. He has been an Executive Director of Codelco’s subsidiaries in London for the last 20 years. He is an active participant in the copper and molybdenum industry associations and in institutions promoting business and relations between the United Kingdom and Chile.
He is a past Board Director of the London Metal Exchange, and served the ECI Board for 15 years, before becoming a Director in 2014.
In addition, he is on the Boards of the International Molybdenum Association, the UK and Polish based members of the Copper Alliance, and the British-Chilean Chamber of Commerce and the Anglo-Chilean Society.
Oriol Guixà is an industrial engineer specialised in mechanical engineering from the School of Industrial and Aeronautical Engineering in Madrid. He started his career in Motorcycles Montesa, as the Head of the Innovation and Development Department, actively participating in the creation of the joint venture with Japan’s Honda Motor Company and leading the trial team that won the World Championship in 1980.
In 1984, he embarked on a new metallurgy project, joining La Farga Lacambra as a shareholder and General Manager. He developed the patent for its copper recycling process and created three new companies (La Farga Tub, La Farga Rod and La Farga Intec). He is the founder of La Fundació La Farga, which has the only Copper Museum in Europe, and has been a Director of ECI since 2010.
